Stephen Moyer is moving from an undead character to live TV.

The True Blood star, who plays vampire Bill Compton on the HBO drama, is joining the cast of NBC's live production of The Sound of Music, which will run Dec. 5.

Moyer will play Capt. Georg von Trapp, a single father and war hero in pre-World War II Austria who brings in a governess, Maria, to care for his seven children. Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood will play Maria.

Underwood and Moyer will follow in famous footsteps. Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel starred in the 1959 Broadway production, and Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer played the roles in the 1965 Oscar-winning film.

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein wrote the music and lyrics, respectively.

Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, whose credits include Chicago and Hairspray, are executive producers of the three-hour, holiday production.

Moyer, who will sing in Music, is no stranger to musicals. Last month, he played Billy Flynn in a production of Chicago at the Hollywood Bowl.
