The Kinks reunion inches closer as Davies brothers actually meet in person

Following years of bad blood, the past several months have seen some rather positive developments within The Kinks. In September, Dave Davies told Rolling Stone that there was about a 50/50 chance the group would reunite sometime in the near future. Then, in December, those odds got even better as the band indicated that a reunion was “as close as it’s ever been to happening.”

Now, in an interview with The Sunday Times (via The Telegraph), Ray Davies revealed that he and his brother have taken yet another substantial step in the reunion process by actually meeting in person. After years of solely exchanging emails, and dismissing one another in various interviews, Ray Davies said the siblings talked briefly just last week.

“I met Dave only last week to talk about getting back together again,” Ray Davies explained. “We’ve also spoken a few times on the phone and emailed. He’s been composing his own songs, but I’d really like to write with him again. We both agree we don’t want to do old stuff or tour with past hits. It’s got to be something new.”

In a Facebook post, Dave Davies clarified that while they had “met and talked, nothing has been agreed on yet.”

The fact that the brothers agree on at least a basic structure (new music, no oldies) is another step in the right direction. In the same December interview with Uncut, Dave Davies indicated that the brothers were being overly cautious as to avoid being seen as “just two miserable old men doing it for the money.”

In an interview with ABC News Radio, Ray Davies said he’d only ever reunite if it meant recording new songs and not “going out to play the oldies,” adding, “I must write something new, something fresh, because… as long as I’m alive, I’m living in the present world, and I want to be inspired by it and resonate the world I live in.”

Still, it’s not the only bit of good news. Ray Davies also told ABC that the brothers may collaborate on a soundtrack to his road memoir,Americana: The Kinks, the Riff, the Road: The Story. In addition, earlier this year, Dave Davies attended the Kinks musical Sunny Afternoon, which Ray Davies co-wrote, and reportedly had nothing but nice things to say.
